Latin Word Nevus; meaning, "SPOT"

There is another mole word -- Nevi -- which is the plural of the word "nevus". Nevi Moles are made up of a particular type of abnormal skin cell, and the name is used to distinguish them from other, similar appearing fleshy growths.

Another form of mole is called --Congenital Nevi Moles -- which are moles that are present at birth. Only about 1 in 100 babies worldwide, are born with a mole,[congenital nevus]. These moles can vary in size some as small as 1/4 inch to some that cover almost the entire body of the child. These large nevi moles vary in size, in shape, in color, texture, and also hairiness. Some of these moles are colored reddish-tan; others mole are almost black. Most of them are shades of brown. Some of these congential moles have fine downy hair; others have long, thick, darker hair. Giant congenital nevi involving much of the body are less common, possibly around one in every 200,000 to 500,000 births. In some cases of children with giant moles, these mole cells can also be found deep into the spinal cord and near the brain, a condition called Neurocutaneous Melanosis .

Finally, "Acquired Nevi Moles" which develop on most of us as we age. These moles can be raised from the skin and be very noticeable, or they may contain unsightly hairs.
